Ubiquity Crypto Support

14 August 2007

Ubuntu is a Debian based Linux distribution (well, maybe you knew this already). And with the success of the first one, features get into Ubuntu faster than in Debian, that has more ‘conservative’ releasing methods (do you remember how long did they need to migrate to X.org? and what about the 3-years woody life?)
With this panorama, one would expect that a feature added to Debian is usually already in Ubuntu. One of the features that doesn’t follow this rule is the cryptographic support in the Ubuntu installer, Ubiquity. It’s not even present in the alternate installer that is using the same d-i interface.

In the last weeks I’ve been working on adding the necessary support to ubiquity. As ubiquity is fully d-i based (it’s just a layer on the top of it), you just need to add partman-crypto d-i component and add the necessary GUI and hooks to it and you have it.

Well, it took its time : P, but I’ve got something working, and even get booted a installation using this. At this point, I won’t be able to give as much time as I was doing before, so here it goes. If you’re ready to help, code, report more bugs or whatever; feel free to check my bzr branch (if you haven’t tried distributed version control, you can start now : ).

I’ve added also a TODO list and testing instructions for the brave (or bored) people (check doc/README.partman-crypto). Anyway, if you test it, be WARNED that: I’m not responsible of any lost data on your computer, even if it just vanishes in flames in front of you. So use a computer without any valuable data on its HDs (or do like me and run a bunch of VirtualBoxes for testing).

If you like, you can usually bug me either via email or in freenode.org (as glledo).

Happy Hacking.
