rtorrent packages for ubuntu gutsy
16 September 2007The latest available version in gutsy for rtorrent is 0.7.4. But I’m using a private tracker with, somehow, bizarre rules. One of those is that they just accept the latest stable version of any kind of client.
So, I’ve packaged libtorrent and rtorrent. If you also need them use my repo (namely, add this to your sources.list:
deb http://apt.geeksynapse.net/ubuntu gutsy main deb-src http://apt.geeksynapse.net/ubuntu gutsy main

Wow! Your own deb packages repository! Is it easy to make a repository?
It sounds interesting to make like a hobby…
Hum… I think I could repair some of my old computers and practise…
And talking about rtorrent… What’s that? A BitTorrent client? I use Transmission. I think it’s the best. Light, rapid and with a graphical interface… What do you want more?
PS: Excuse my english… :P

The repository is just an HTTP server with certain directory structure. What is a bit more complicated (not that much, anyway) is to build the packages. Google for the MOTU (Masters of the Universe) packaging tutorial.
About bittorrent, Transmission seems to silly overload the tracker, and so, it’s banned from that private tracker. It seems that they ban it in lots of places.
Anyway, I like the fact that you can use rtorrent with screen and hide it in the back, and it doesn’t care if you restart the X server, for instance. Besides is really light (is coded in C , not in python, like most of the clients).
I also compiled for OS X, but anyway, is available in fink/darwinports too… and I broke my laptop’s harddrive friday… :P

Are there any plans to upgrade the rtorrent package to 0.7.9 (the latest available upstream)?
